Soon after leaving the Windhoek Truck Port, you will notice the White Marble Obelisk to the left of the road in the mountains. This is Heroes’ Acre, a war memorial built to honour Namibia’s freedom fighters, is an unmistakable landmark with its towering marble obelisk that comes into view soon after the police checkpoint. It was built after Namibia gained its independence in 1990 to honour all those who lost their lives fighting for freedom.\n\nAs the road from Windhoek meanders through the mountains, you will pass through the ‘Window Bridge’, which perfectly frames the landscape, into the valley below. The hills are tawny-coloured in the dry mid-year months and vivid green after summer rainfall.\n\nA tree-filled expanse lines the road as you enter the town of Rehoboth. The town, 87km from Windhoek, is predominantly the home of the Rehoboth Basters, a proud group of people originating from the Cape of Good Hope, descendants of Dutch colonists and indigenous Khoisan women. They moved north, crossing the Orange/Gariep River and settling in Rehoboth in 1871.\n\nJust as you leave Rehoboth, you will see the Acacia Forrest to your left. Here you will get one of the highest densities of Acacia trees in the World.\n\nContinuing South you will see the signs indicating that you are passing through the Tropic of Capricorn. This refers to the line of latitude at 23˚ south of the equator. The road continues south as you notice the landscape changing. Heading towards Kalkrand, you will notice small stalls next to the road, selling different Springbok skin mats and other creations.\n\nKalkrand is a small settlement where a quick stop will offer you the chance to stretch your legs. It is not too far anymore only 90km to your final destination.\n\nYou will turn left before reaching Mariental and from there it is roughly 30km until you are at Kalahari Anib Lodge. Let the red dunes of the Kalahari embrace you and make you feel one with this magical place.",

"Description": "After starting your journey of 367 km from the Windhoek Truck Port to Namibia’s adventure capital Swakopmund. First things first, after leaving Windhoek, you will head North to Namibia’s Garden Town, Okahandja. Okahandja is a rather large town, in the Namibian context, approximately 70 km from Windhoek.\n\nOnce you leave Okahandja, you will head west towards the Namibian coast. Have a look at the Landscape which slowly changes from bushveld to desert. It is a wonderful road which will take you from Okahandja to Karibib. Travelling west your first stop will be at Wilhelmstal, the small settlement was once an important railway station in Namibia’s colonial history. It is now more of a farming community. At Wilhelmstal you will have the chance to stretch your legs and use the bathrooms. The “Padstal” translates to road stall and here you will findeverything needed for the remainder of your journey. It has become a must to stop here when travelling in the area. Fresh juices and baked goods, biltong and droëwors and other refreshments are just some of the many offerings that they have available.\n\nFrom Wilhelmstal your journey will continue and not before long you will have reached Karibib. Driving through Karibib you will notice that the Marble industry is the lifeblood of the small community.\n\nFrom Karibib it is only 25 km to Usakos. Usakos is on the Khan River, and was the heart of Namibia’s Rail industry in years gone by. Operations have moved to the capital and Usakos has become a quiet little town, packed with History. Outside of Usakos, you will see on your right side you will see a Gemstone market. These wonderful minerals have been “mined” by the small miners of Namibia in the mineral rich Erongo Mountains. Here for a small fee you can purchase raw and unpolished stones and gems or stones; which have been crafted into the most wonderful jewellery pieces and souvenirs.\n\nThe road continues west and the barren Namib Desert is starting to be the prominent feature when you look out the window. You will notice the many trucks on this stretch of road as there are many mines in this desert. Once you see the turn-off To Arandis you only have 50km to go until you reach your destination. You will notice Swakopmund before you are there and the cool Atlantic is ready to welcome you.",

You will have missed most of the early traffic and will casually make your way back to Windhoek.\n\nYou will notice the glistening road as you say farewell to the Namib Desert and the way that the vegetation increases after every kilometre. One cannot help but wonder how people used to travel through day inland through this relentless yet scenic and beautiful desert.\n\nYou will reach Usakos and before turning left, to head towards Karibib have a look at the little steam train proudly standing by the rail station. It pays homage to the important role Usakos played in the History of the Namibian railroad. Only about 25 km to Karibib and the start of that wonderful new road all the way to Okahandja. The space on the road is a welcome relief. After about 50 km you will reach Wilhelmstal, and have a chance to stretch your legs and to get some refreshments for the remainder of your journey. Wilhelmstal is a famous stopover when travelling to and from the coast and one can hardly believe the hustle and bustle of the little “padstal’’ in the middle of nowhere. “Padstal” is Afrikaans and roughly translates to road stall.\n\nFrom Wilhelmstal it is not long before you reach Okahandja, Namibia’s garden town. Driving past Okahandja, just before you see the large Engen Service Station, on your left hand side you will see a small granite mountain surrounded by a fence. This Mountain is called “Moordkoppie” which is translated from Afrikaans and means Murder Hill. This mountain serves a reminder of a bloody battle between the OvaHerero and Nama tribes on 23 August 1850.\n\nLeaving Okahandja, you will head towards your final destination, Windhoek. As Windhoek approaches you will see the two towers of the Van Eck power station, to your left. Have a closer look to the one with the iron grid around it, it’s skew! It has a long recorded history predating the arrival of Europeans and Colonisation.\n\nYou will leave Okahandja towards Otjiwarongo, keeping north on your way to Etosha. On your way, roughly halfway between the two towns you will see the Omatako mountains, two tall peaks on your left. They are quite magnificent, both of them standing at over 2 000 m above sea level. It is a fantastic sight, two imposing mountains in the middle of African Savannah. Omatako means “Buttocks” in Otjiherero and is the topic of many jokes among Namibians. After leaving the Omatako behind, you will reach Otjiwarongo, which means “beautiful” in Otjiherero. Otjiwarongo is a thriving little town built on many aspects, mining and agriculture being the most important.\n\nYou will leave Otjiwarongo and head to Outjo a mere 67 km away. Outjo is a small town and the gateway to Etosha, it was established by German colonial authorities as a military outpost responsible for the North-Western parts of Namibia. Today Outjo is the home of many tourist attractions and has a strong agricultural community.\n\nFrom Outjo it is approximately 100km to Etosha Trading post, where you will have the chance to stretch your legs, before finally arriving at Etosha Safari Camp, the famous Gondwana Lodge, which has a distinct Namibian flair and is decorated like a truly African Shebeen. Sit back and relax before your next adventure in Etosha National Park, the place of legends.\n\nPlease note this route stops at Etosha Safari Camp and does not continue to Etosha King Nehale Lodge.",

As the “gateway to Etosha” Outjo has numerous bistros and friendly residents that are eager to greet and entertain the tourists passing through.\n\nEntering the Otjozondjupa Region one finds an even bigger town- Otjiwarongo, one of Namibia’s fastest growing towns with the 28 000 inhabitants and numerous surrounding private game farms and nature reserves.\n\nOn route to Okahandja one passes the Okanjati Wildschutzgebiet (Okanjati Game Reserve) on the right-hand side. The Game reserve is about 360 square kilometres and privately owned for the protection of hippos and to house many different species of birds, antelope, lions, cheetahs, and even the much-endangered rhinos. A fossilized dinosaur footprint can be seen in the park.\n\nOkahandja is known as the “Garden town of Namibia” and is the place where the Okavango and Okamita rivers meet and flow into each other, but do not expect much water in the river as it only flows when the area has had heavy rain fall for some time during the months of November to April. One major tourist attraction is where many locals carve wood into many different decorative items, such as giraffe statues and small canoe boats. Exiting Okahandja the Von Bach Dam turnoff will appear on the left-hand side.\n\nThe last 47km before one reaches Windhoek sees a rather dramatic shift from the semi-arid countryside and rural areas to industrialized buildings and suburban life. The 30km route southwards from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay is a breath-taking stretch between the sand dunes and the crashing Atlantic Ocean. Walvis Bay is known for its lagoon, an internationally acclaimed RAMSAR site that is visited by thousands of water birds. The lagoon and the adjacent salt works attract lesser and greater flamingos, which tinge the water with pink at various times of the year.\n\nAs you leave Walvis Bay, you pass the lofty Dune 7 on the left-hand side. Soon the gravel plains of the desert surround you. Vogelfederberg, an outcrop of giant granite boulders, is a landmark on this section. Eventually the road dips into the Kuiseb Canyon to cross the bridge over the Kuiseb River and snakes through the tawny hills before levelling out again. The Kuiseb Canyon is where geologist Henno Martin, author of The Sheltering Desert, and his colleague and friend, Hermann Korn, made their hideout to avoid internment during WWII.\n\nNext is the rugged, hilly land and small chasms of the Gaub Pass, which meanders through a tapestry of earthy shades and textures. After the Gaub Pass, signs for the Tropic of Capricorn come into view, the signposts adorned with colourful stickers from the many travellers who have stopped to acknowledge one of the five major circles of latitude.\n\nSolitaire, with its old rusting automobiles and its cacti, has become a popular stop over the years for its frontier-like atmosphere and its apple crumble. Besides Moose McGregor’s Desert Bakery, there is a fuel station and general dealer store, reminiscent of shops of old. The yearly rainfall levels are scrawled onto the blackboard on the outside wall, always an eye-opener in this arid part of the world.\n\nThirty kilometres southward, after a scenic view of yellow grassland bisected by a line of green trees marking the Tsondab River and edged in the distance by the mountains, you reach Namib Desert Lodge. The lodge has an impressive backdrop of fossilised dunes that were formed when the sand compacted into sandstone in the more humid climate that existed between ten and twenty million years ago. For those continuing to Sesriem, the shuttle route continues southwards for 60km to the Sesriem Camp, where guests are dropped off to proceed to their destinations and to explore the splendour of the Namib.",

"Description": "Wave goodbye to Swakopmund as you follow the C34 northwards along the coast to the town of Henties Bay, 70km away and popular with fisher folk. On the way you will notice, at 35km north of Swakopmund, the small settlement of Wlotzkasbaken with brightly-painted holiday houses. Wlotzkasbaken translated as ‘Wlotzka’s beacon’ was named after a member of a surveying team, who worked in the area in the 1930s and set up his fishing shack along the coast.\n\nSouth of Henties Bay, you’ll find the 2008 Zeila wreck well signposted. The fishing trawler, purchased by an Indian company for scrap metal, was on its way to Bombay when it broke its towline in the early hours. It now lies in the shallows. Cormorants nest in the rusting hulk of the ship and gemstone sellers ply their wares to visitors, who turn off from the road to view the wreck.\n\nAfter Henties, the route follows the C35 inland towards Uis on the gravel. The weather warms progressively as you leave the coastal mist behind you. It’s 120km to Uis, an old tin-mining town. As you near the town roadside stalls begin to appear. Many are creatively decorated, their tables filled with an assortment of coloured gemstones from the area.\n\nTurning northwards just before Uis, you soon reach the turnoff to Brandberg (‘Burning Mountain’ or ‘Dâureb’ in Damara-Nama), which appears on the left-hand side, as does the looming hulk of the mountain in the distance. It is so named for its orange-red glow in the late afternoon as the sun catches its granite rock, setting the mountain aflame in colour. Brandberg’s Königstein peak, at 2573m, towers above the grassy plains and is Namibia’s highest. Although Brandberg has thousands of paintings, found in open shelters and under rock overhangs eroded by wind and water, the guided walk to the famous White Lady painting in the Tsisab Gorge is the only route easily accessible to visitors. They are considered to be about 2000-years-old and are predominantly of people involved in everyday events from dancing to hunting.\n\nThe ‘White Lady’ painting was discovered by Reinhardt Maack, a topographer surveying the upper slopes in 1918. At the time it was thought to be a rendering of a young Mediterranean girl. The name ‘White Lady’ was coined by Henri Breuil in 1955. The painting is now understood to represent a healer or medicine man holding a bow and arrow in one hand and a cup or wand in the other.\n\nAs you continue northwards, elephant caution signs begin to dot the roadside as you enter the north-western corner of Namibia, which is desert elephant territory. The desert elephants often travel along the ephemeral river systems that remain dry until summer rainfall fills their catchment areas.\n\nThe route continues towards Khorixas and then turns eastward towards Damara Mopane Lodge.",

Later on, the town became a centre for the karakul trade. From Sesriem the journey is northwards to the spectacular scenery of Namib Desert Lodge.\n\nFrom the arms of the Kalahari, the route follows the road to Mariental and after a short section turns to the west towards Maltahöhe, considered to be the gateway to the desert. As you near Maltahöhe, donkey carts and their passengers are often visible. The donkey cart is the most common form of travel in the rural areas of Namibia. The carts are often customised, bearing the names of vehicles like ‘Ford’, ‘Toyota’, ‘Opel’ and even ‘Mercedes Benz’, and sometimes include humorous inscriptions like ‘Take me home’ or ‘King of the road’.\n\nHouses, a few shops, a fuel station and an impressive Dutch Reformed Church flank the road through Maltahöhe before the tarmac ends and the gravel begins. Today it is still a railway junction and the remains of the lime kiln can still be seen. The steel rail bridge is also quite a famous photo motif for travellers in Namibia. The landscape gradually shifts from the open, arid plains to more vegetated central regions. \n\nAs you pass through Kalkrand, keep an eye out for the small stalls selling different Springbok skin mats and other creations. It won't be long before you see the signs indicating that you are passing through the Tropic of Capricorn. You are extremely close to reaching Rehoboth.  \n\nEntering the town, the famous Acacia Forest appears on your right. The town’s rich history, dates to its settlement in 1871. \n\nThe winding mountain roads offer one last breathtaking scene before the large marble monument of Heroes’ Acre comes into view on your right. This serves as your final landmark marking your return to Windhoek. \n\nThe drive through the Khomas Hochland mountains offers a final scenic stretch, before descending into the capital. \n\nFrom here, it is a short drive to Windhoek Truckport, concluding your journey. "Description": "Your journey to the spectacular Sandhof lilies begins as you head south on the B1 from Windhoek. Soon after leaving the capital city, the road winds through the Khomas Hochland mountains, offering sweeping valley views. \n\nShortly after the police checkpoint, the large marble monument of Heroes’ Acre will appear to your left, standing as a memorial to Namibia’s freedom fighters. \n\nA tree-lined approach signals your arrival in Rehoboth, a town’s rich history, dating back to its settlement in 1871. Leaving town, look left to see one of the world’s highest densities of Acacia trees. Continues south across the Tropic of Capricorn (23° south of the equator) before turning off onto gravel roads (C24/C14) towards Maltahöhe. \n\nThe scenery becomes more arid and expansive, characteristic of this region, as you travel deeper int o southern Namibia. The final stretch leads to Farm Sandhof, approximately 40 km outside Maltahöhe. \n\nHere, the Sandhof lilies bloom in a massive 700-800 hectare clay pan, producing a spectacular pink and white display for only 6-8 days after heavy rains. The pan requires at least 30 cm of water to trigger this phenomenon, making the blooming irregular and not guaranteed every year. \n\nThis rare natural event transforms the landscape into a seasonal wonder - a truly special and time-sensitive experience.
